STROKERS DELI & SUBS

Address: 566 Broad Street, Shrewsbury, NJ 07702

Strokers is a place that was recommended to me from a friend of mine at work. She always talked about it, and how that the subs there were better than those at Jersey Mike’s just down the street. One day at work, we went to grab lunch from Strokers, and I have to say that she was definitely right.

The place itself is a hole-in-the-wall, sandwiched in a small storefront plaza. There’s no dining area inside the place, just the counter to order your sandwiches. All of the employees work really expeditiously to prepare your sandwich, and are always really friendly. The sub selection is also really phenomenal, boasting a wide number of combinations using ham, turkey, roast beef, salami, and capicola, just to name a few. They also have a daily rotating menu of sandwich and soup specials, which are also really great to try out. When it comes time to add on all the vegetables and condiments, I usually ask for the works: lettuce, tomatoes, onions, salt & pepper, mayo, and oil & vinegar. The bread that they use is so fresh, the deli meats are all really moist, and the toppings really make the sandwich come together as a whole.

Strokers is definitely a great place to stop by to grab a quick fix for lunch, or to pick up something for dinner on the way home from work (or any other location you might be traveling from). I would recommend it to anyone who’s looking for something fresh, something tasty, and something filling to devour.

Here are my rankings for Strokers:

Food: 5 / 5
The bread and meats are both excellent quality, and the subs taste really great. The wide selection of subs that Strokers offers can dazzle you, too.

Atmosphere: ~
Since there isn’t a dining area, an atmosphere rating isn’t really necessary. But just like any sub shop, you can see everything being prepared right in front of your eyes.

Service: 5 / 5
All of the employees, from the ones helping to make my sandwich to the one that rang me up on the register were really courteous and friendly.

Price: 4.5 / 5
For the amount of food that you get, I would say that it’s a really good deal overall. It’s $7.50 for a full-sized sub that can be cut into quarters, enough to feed two people. Also good to note is that Strokers is cash-only.

Overall: 14.5 / 15 (97%)

JERSEY MIKE’S

Address: 1048 Broad Street, Shrewsbury, NJ 07702

As a native New Jerseyian, Jersey Mike’s, a franchise sub shop that started in Point Pleasant, has been a place my family has been going for a very long time. I always fondly remember bringing home a Club Supreme sandwich, loaded with roast beef, turkey, lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, and bacon. Back then, Jersey Mike’s was known for their heaping portions and fresh ingredients in each and every sub. Thankfully, that is something that has not changed throughout the years that we have been going back to the shops.

Our home Jersey Mike’s store is in Middletown, but I took a trip out to the Shrewsbury location today since it’s really close to where I work. The store was jam packed and the line was about 6 people deep. Being located really close to a lot of office complexes, I’m sure that it’s a really popular lunch destination. The interior of the restaurant is what you would expect out of the other Jersey Mike’s locations: some tabletops to sit and eat, some TVs mounted overhead, and the sub counter in the back. I grabbed a Club Sub this time (turkey, ham, provolone cheese, bacon, and mayo) and topped it off with Mike’s Way (lettuce, onions, tomatoes, oil, vinegar, salt & pepper) and some of their hot cherry pepper relish. The sub turned out delicious as always and I got a nice bag of Miss Vickie’s BBQ chips and 20 oz. drink to accompany my meal. The great part: only $7.

Usually, just the sub itself is $7; there’s a thing at some of the Jersey Mike’s restaurants where they will offer a Student Discount, that includes the regular-sized sub, chips, and drink for just $7. It’s a real steal for how much food that you get, so give it a try when you’re at the counter. The worst that can happen is they don’t have it and you just put back the chips. But my brother tried it in the Wall location too and they were able to do it. Jersey Mike’s has been a great place to go to for some quality subs for a long time, and I won’t stop going there anytime soon.

Here are my rankings for Jersey Mike’s:

Food: 5 / 5
Bread is fresh, meats are fresh, sub condiments are fresh. The consistent quality of the ingredients and the wide offerings of both cold and hot subs is truly awesome.

Atmosphere: 4 / 5
The dining tables were pretty clean and the shop itself had a nice, fresh smell of sandwiches in it (I don’t know, maybe that was just me).

Service: 5 / 5
The sandwich artists were extremely quick in preparing my sub and the rest of the staff were really friendly.

Price: 4 / 5
The subs by themselves do lean a bit on more on the expensive side, but overall I think that the quality of the food is worth the price. If you do get the student combo, you’ll be golden.
